Sightseeing
Temple of Afaia
Walk through the ruins of the Temple of Aphaia, where Doric columns catch the morning light just as they did 2,500 years ago. Listen closely in the shade of ancient pines and you might still hear echoes of offerings to forgotten gods and footsteps of generations past.
Built: Around 500 BC
Style: Doric, with 32 limestone columns (20 still standing today)
Dedicated to: Aphaia, a local fertility goddess later associated with Athena
Famous for: Its high classical pediment sculptures (now in Munich’s Glyptothek) and its tranquil, scenic setting
Archaeological Site & Museum of Kolona
Wander along the ancient ridge of Kolona, where a single standing column watches over the sea like a sentinel of time. This was once a bustling temple to Apollo, and you can still feel the history in the stones under your feet.
Named after: The single standing column (“Kolona”) from an ancient temple to Apollo
Historic layers: From the Bronze Age to Roman times—over 3,000 years of history
Highlights: Temple ruins, ancient walls, and a small but rich archaeological museum
Famous for: The lone Doric column and a stunning seaside sunset view
Holy Church of St. Nectarios
One of the largest churches in Greece, it’s dedicated to the island’s beloved modern saint. Wander through its spacious courtyards, light a candle, and take in the calm atmosphere. Whether you're here for the history or just the view, it's a beautiful place to slow down and soak in the spirit of Aegina.
Built: Early 20th century (1904–1944)
Style: Byzantine Revival, with large domes and twin bell towers
Dedicated to: Saint Nektarios of Aegina, one of the most beloved modern Orthodox saints
Famous for: Its grand scale (one of the largest churches in the Balkans), peaceful atmosphere, and the saint’s tomb and monastery nearby, which draw thousands of pilgrims every year
Palaiochora
Discover the Aegina’s “Silent City” of Saints and Stones. Paleochora feels like stepping into a forgotten world. Wander the trails, peek into old chapels, and enjoy the calm.
